IP addresses, explained.
What is an IP address?
The address the internet uses to send data back to you - like a return address on a letter. Every website you visit sees it. It usually belongs to your internet provider or mobile network, not your device itself.
Why is my location wrong?
The location comes from your IP address, not GPS, so it shows where your internet provider routes traffic - often a nearby city, sometimes one much further away. On mobile data or a VPN it can be another region or country entirely.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses are four numbers, like 203.0.113.42, and the world has nearly run out of them. IPv6 is the newer, much longer format, like 2001:db8::1. Which one you see depends on your provider - both work the same for browsing.
What is a user agent?
A line of text your browser sends with every request, naming the browser, its version and your operating system. Websites use it to serve pages that work on your device - and analytics tools use it to report which browsers visitors use.
Can websites see all of this?
Yes - your IP address and user agent go to every site you visit, and any page can read the screen, language and timezone details too. That is how analytics knows where visitors come from and which devices they use.
How do I hide my IP address?
A VPN or proxy sends your traffic through another server, so sites see its IP instead of yours. If the timezone from your IP and your device timezone differ here, that often means a VPN or proxy is already in use.
Is my data stored?
No. Your IP and location are read from your request and shown straight back to you - we don’t save them - and everything else is read in your browser.
